NAVER Cloud (CEO Kim Yu-won) unveiled HyperCLOVA X SEED 4B, its independently developed lightweight omnimodal AI model, at the 2026 Korea Institute of Military Science and Technology (KIMST) Annual Conference, showcasing a range of defense AI use cases including real-time analysis in edge environments such as drones and tactical vehicles. The company also presented its defense AX (AI transformation) roadmap built on sovereign AI operable within closed networks, outlining a full-stack defense AI strategy spanning infrastructure, AI models, and agents.

The modern battlefield increasingly demands real-time analysis of diverse data — drone footage, satellite imagery, radio communications, and operational documents — that must be rapidly translated into decisions. Omnimodal AI, capable of simultaneously understanding not only text but also images, video, and audio, has accordingly emerged as a core technology for the defense sector.

HyperCLOVA X SEED 4B is a lightweight omnimodal model optimized for these defense environments. Equipped with NAVER Cloud's proprietary vision encoder (HyperCLOVA X CLIP) and audio encoder, the model can process multiple data types simultaneously — a distinct technological edge developed entirely in-house. It has also been trained on a wide range of Korean-language data, including Korean-language documents, strengthening its understanding of Korean contexts critical to defense applications.

Because defense AI requires both data security and real-time performance, models must run reliably not only in the cloud but also in compute-constrained environments such as drones, unmanned systems, and tactical vehicles. NAVER Cloud built the 4B omnimodal model by applying pruning and knowledge distillation techniques to its existing 8B-class LLM backbone, cutting the model size in half. Through a more efficient omnimodal production pipeline, the final model outperforms the previous 8B omnimodal model, enabling low-latency inference at the edge and enhancing suitability for field deployment.

HyperCLOVA X SEED 4B can be applied to a wide range of scenarios, including object detection from drone and coastal surveillance footage, change detection and analysis of satellite imagery, hazard identification at firing ranges and barracks, automatic recognition of military equipment, and battlefield map analysis. The model is expected to support ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) automation, explainable unmanned systems, and integrated situational awareness.

Noting that defense is a domain that demands both a high degree of autonomy and strict control, NAVER Cloud presented a sovereign AI framework operable within closed networks as its core vision. The company's full-stack defense AI — covering infrastructure, MLOps, LLMs, and agents, all deployable and operable directly within closed networks — ensures both data sovereignty and security.

NAVER Cloud plans to establish the foundation for defense AX and participate in a range of defense projects by the end of this year, then expand AI agents across all areas of national defense by 2030, progressively completing the AI transformation of the entire defense sector through advanced autonomous operational support systems.
